CD&R aims to encourage companies in which it invests to take responsibility for the environmental and social impact of their business operations reflecting the Firm’s belief that the observance of sound environmental and social strategies is essential for building strong brands and safeguarding reputation, which in turn is vital for long-term success. We believe that there can be a strong, positive correlation between financial performance and corporate, social and environmental responsibility.

Our portfolio companies share a strong commitment to citizenship manifested in numerous ways as illustrated in the following examples:

  • Culligan Culligan is dedicated to helping their customers live greener lives through drinking water systems that reduce the carbon footprint and water treatment systems that reduce the use of chemicals and cleaning agents in the home. Culligan has a strong social commitment to providing their expertise and compassion to those in need. They recently donated over 250,000 bottles of drinking water to Haiti earthquake victims and installed 3 industrial size state-of-the-art drinking water systems which are now providing clean water to three separate communities in that country. Culligan’s employees share in this social responsibility and recently donated over 300 clothing items to The Chicago Bears/Jewel-Osco Annual Coat Drive.   • Diversey Diversey is in business to provide a cleaner, healthier future for the world. Its commitment to social responsibility is deeply embedded throughout its business, spanning six pillars - operations, customers, communities, workforce, partners and governance. As one of only 21 companies worldwide accepted into Climate Savers, the greenhouse gas reduction program of the World Wildlife Fund, Diversey has vowed to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent by 2013. Diversey is a charter sponsor of the Global Water Roundtable, an international consortium focused on addressing standards for water conservation, water stress, river pollution and declines in freshwater wildlife species. Diversey is deeply committed to improving the communities in which it does business. Its Global Children’s Initiative teams the passion and creativity of employees with the needs of the world’s children. Diversey employees adopt schools in impoverished communities and contribute time, supplies and expertise tailored to local needs. This spirit is captured in Diversey’s guiding principles called “This We Believe,” which serve as a promise to people to whom it is responsible and whose trust it continually seeks to earn.
  • Exova Exova a leading provider of laboratory-based testing and related advisory services, operating from 111 laboratories in 24 countries worldwide. From aerospace to automotives, food to pharmaceuticals, plastic to polymers, it’s hard to think of something the company hasn’t tested, calibrated or certified to make the world a better and safer place. Exova takes corporate responsibility seriously and is committed to meeting the differing needs of its stakeholders. The company’s business model is structured to add value to the communities in which it operates, by providing technically demanding testing for a broad range of products and processes to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards imposed by customers, accreditation bodies and regulatory authorities, and to embrace sustainable development and mitigate the impact on the natural environmental by reducing waste, emissions, carbon footprint and consumption of water and supplies.
  • HD Supply HD Supply is dedicated to being a responsible corporate citizen in all aspects of business. HD Supply’s social responsibility efforts are focused on four key areas: its associates, its communities, the environment and its business partners. The company launched ideallygreen, a company-wide program developed to help customers select eco-preferable products, which supports environmentally responsible business practices.
  • Hertz Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability are important issues for The Hertz Corporation and its employees, customers and key stakeholders. Hertz is the only rental car company to have had its CEO endorse the “CEO Climate Policy Recommendations to G8 Leaders.” Hertz continues to offer fuel efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles though The Green Collection, and has entered a joint commitment with Nissan to bring zero-emission mobility to car rental in the U.S. and Europe by early 2011. Hertz recently launched “Connect by Hertz,” a global car sharing program which aims to provide a convenient, lower-emission alternative to car ownership. Hertz donated $1 million to the U.S. National Parks Foundation and is a co-sponsor of Green Week, a National Basketball Association initiative for environmental awareness.   • NCI NCI and its affiliated companies strive to support the communities where they operate by respecting the land and providing safe, healthy and respectful work environments. NCI manufactures products of the highest quality and is a leader in addressing the growing demand for green building.
  • Rexel At Rexel, corporate responsibility takes the form of five commitments: 1) accelerating the distribution of environmentally-friendly products and solutions, 2) limiting our environmental footprint (read Rexel’s Charter for the environment), 3) enabling sustainable economic growth, 4) promoting employees’ personal development, and 5) working to help local communities where Rexel does business.
  • Sally Beauty For the past 13 years SallyCares has been able to touch the lives of thousands of women in need. SallyCares has spearheaded an effort contributing more than $2 million to fund breast cancer research at the City of Hope. The SallyCares Anniversary Fund has donated over $200,000 to women’s and children shelters. In addition, Sally Beauty has partnered with the National Cosmetology Association to provide $1000 scholarships to applicants ready to start a new career.
  • ServiceMaster ServiceMaster is committed to giving back to the communities it serves. ServiceMaster’s efforts are focused on producing more environmentally responsible products and services, supporting organizations and programs that improve the communities they provide for, and striving for a safe, diverse and creative workplace.   • U.S. Foodservice U.S. Foodservice’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program is a companywide initiative focused on reducing environmental impact, offering sustainable products and building stronger communities. The company is active in a number of government programs, such as EPA SmartWay, to help reduce its carbon footprint, and continually seeks out sustainable products, including Marine Stewardship Council certified seafood, for customers. U.S. Foodservice is also committed to strengthening the communities where employees live and work by partnering with Feeding America™, and donating to American Red Cross relief efforts throughout America and the world.
